Mid-Michigan History:Wright Hotel of Alma
The Wright Hotel, shown right, was built in Alma by capitalist Ammi Wright and opened in 1883. It was considered one of the finest hotels outside Detroit and was a favorite of traveling men. Its popularity soon required that an addition be built, and it also housed the First State Bank.

An early investor in the Chicago, Saginaw, and Canada Railroad, Colonel John Elwell came from New Jersey to St. Louis to supervise the affairs of the penniless rail line. He leased the railroad during its bankruptcy and, through his astute management, made a fortune.
